Will acetone (nail polish remover) damage, dye, or affect the hair on my head?

I can't get styling wax out of my hair and my chemistry teacher told me acetone will dissolve wax, but i don't want to use it if it will affect my hair or make it break, fall out, change color, or anything.

it could very possibly dissolve the dye since it is organic. It will damage the hair, it will just dissolve oils in your hair and head. So it will create horribly dry skin and dry out your hair. But it will not cause it to fall out or break, acetone can't break down proteins. I wouldn't recomend acetone as a hair cleaner at all. Your chem teacher is kindof retarded. Plus acetone isn't the greatest at dissolving long esters that are waxes. Do not dump acetone in your hair. bad idea. It is best to repeatedly wash with hot soap and water. I don't recomend dumping organic solvents in your hair. Plus the amount of fumes from that. Acetone in that concentration isn't good for you, and not to mention the fire hazard that is now on your head. I wouldn't ask your teacher for advice again. I could give you awesome solvents, but i don't want you to get cancer. So you will just have to stick with soap.

Next time use a glue.

TRY PEANUT BUTTER IT WORKS FOR CHEWING GUM, SO IT MAY WORK FOR WAX, ALSO TRY MELTING THE WAX WITH A CURLING IRON TO SOFTEN IT UP THEN COMB IT OUT. MAY TAKE A WHILE BUT IT WILL WORK

I would not put acetone in your hair. Just keep washing the area with the styling wax. It will come out eventually. I mean come on... you don't want to put something that takes off nailpolish in your HAIR!

  1. Well I actuallyahave had to put nail polish remover on my hair once. I got superglue stuck in it. It's was a mess and a very stupid mistake to leave the glue out around my 4 year old. Lol... Buf i Googled how to remove it and itisaidit to use nail polish remover. Your teacher was actually not a retard likelone said in privious comment and idI also agree the peanut butter works for gum so possibly can have the same effect saturate a cotton ball in the nail-polish remover and apply it to the wax on the scalp closest to the hairline. Allow the remover to completely soak into the wax Use a cotton swab to reach the wax that is farther from the hairline. Saturate the tip of the swap in the nail-polish remover and apply directly to the wax
Use cloths to remove the wax stuck in your hair. Divide longer hair into easy-to-manage sections, if possible. Pour nail-polish remover into a clean white cloth folded in half, and thoroughly saturate the cloth. Take each section of hair and run the cloth over each section. You may need to moisten the cloth several times. If hair is short use a cotton ball saturated in remover and saturate hair one section at a time.Comb out any dry pieces of wax remaining after treating your hair with nail-polish remover. A fine-tooth comb works well, but be careful, as the wax will cause the hair to snag. When you are done I recomend lofionlon the scalp after washing well with soap then shampoo and deep deep conditioner even hot oil therapy it will change your hair color and be sure to to this in a ventalated area and a place not exposed to flame also be precausious of your eyesebest of luck by the way I have great hairhandh the remover didntd mess my hair
